February HP World Magazine Online news

Ink: HP's Secret Sauce
What is it that makes Hewlett-Packard's Imaging and Printing Group (IPG) so successful in the highly competitive printing marketplace? Is it the ink? Or is it the media? Or both? HP says its printer solutions are based on perfect interactions. HP World Magazine takes a look at some of the behind the scenes activities of the IPG.

Breaking Down the Chinese Wall
China has become the fourth largest trade body in the world following the United States, the European Union and Japan. Technology companies are not about to let that slip out from under them. HP CEO Carly Fiorina spent part of December touring China and meeting with a roster of luminaries that included President Jiang Zemin.

A Slow Death for Viruses
HP researcher Matt Williamson and colleagues are developing a methodology called virus-throttling. They are mimicking the body's ability to limit damage from unknown biological viruses. To achieve that end, they're developing a software filter that limits the rate of connections to other systems.

HP Takes Stand to Shape Recycling Policy
Hewlett-Packard puts computer recycling on the front burner with its decision to propose an e-waste bill in California. HP, and pretty much every other high-tech manufacturer, had been opposed to state laws that attempt to assign responsibility for the mounting problem of computer disposal. The plan calls for companies to recycle the products they manufacture that contain CRTs.

Cheaper Is Better
HP announced that it intends to move a major portion of IT services work offshore, particularly to India. It is one of many U.S.- based global technology giants taking part in a trend that is not only providing quality software development but at cheaper wages. HP's decision appears to be in line with a Forrester Researcher report in November that said at least 3.3 million U.S. service-related jobs are headed offshore by 2015. The IT industry will lead the exodus.

Bad Company?
If European news reports are to be believed, HP showed up, along with 23 other U.S. companies, on Iraq's U.N.-mandated list of foreign companies that supported the country's weapons programs. Another report said HP was an unwitting contributor to a 'violent, anti-minority' group in India. But on closer inspection, it becomes clear there's less going on than meets the eye.

HP Certifies Service Providers
Hewlett-Packard designed its Service Provider Certification Program aimed at application service providers (ASPs), managed service providers (MSPs) and managed hosting providers. Enterprise customers, who more and more are going with the trend of IT as a service instead of a capital-intensive internal department, want assurances that the companies they contract with really can deliver the hosting services they advertise, such as e-commerce, mail and messaging, HP said, and this program delivers those assurances.

Breig Leads Interex 2003 Board
Interex rang in the New Year with a new board member, David Pellone, who will serve as treasurer. Barry Breig, now in his second term as a board member, will serve as the chairman of Interex's 2003 board.

Perfect Enough
A new book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author George Anders, titled 'Perfect Enough: Carly Fiorina and the Reinvention of Hewlett-Packard,' peeks inside the HP boardroom to chronicle some of the most dramatic moments in the company's recent history. We carry an excerpt that describes the company's fateful decision to seek an outside CEO in early 1999, and provides behind-the-scenes detail about the nationwide search that led to Fiorina's selection.

HP pulls TV ad featuring astronaut
Hewlett-Packard has pulled an ad from its marketing campaign because it features images related to space travel. In the wake of the space shuttle Columbia disaster, HP yanked one of the television spots in the company's current series. The ad in question features an astronaut floating about a moonscape, wandering along a highway and then arriving at his own suburban home.

Itanium gives OpenVMS new lease on life
In what is being described as a crucial step to ensuring the OpenVMS operating system doesn't suffer the fate of many of its shorter-lived contemporaries, HP engineers on Jan. 31 got the venerable OS up and running on an Itanium-based computer. The positive results with Itanium mean the company will be able to begin shipping developer kits to key software partners in June and sell OpenVMS Itanium servers one year after that, HP said.

Scripting a new way to send e-mail, courtesy HP Labs India
HP Labs India is all set to unveil Scriptmail, a box device with a touch-screen that can instantly send an e-mail across in any language. In the next phase of its research program, HP Labs plans to experiment with paper-like displays that can be erased and reused instead of a fixed screen. This is part of HP Labs focus on building affordable and low-cost communication devices for mass markets.
