For those of you who attended the original Digital CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) seminar way back in 1987, Ole Fadum is no stranger. Since that time he has visited New Zealand a number of times and his presentations have always been well received. He is back in New Zealand giving seminars at the Appita conference in Rotorua on the 10th and 11th of December.
Although the focus of his seminars is process control in the Pulp and Paper industry, in my experience, his comments and insights into process control are applicable to any Process Industry - be it Forestry, Dairy factory production and the like. If you have any pretensions or intent to do - or are already involved in - process control in a continuous or process industry, these seminars are for you. Registration details are at the end of the flyer.
Encompass supports this flyer as a service to members but has no other involvement in the seminar or with Appita.

Subject: DECUS OpenVMS SIG news
There are a few things which have crossed my desk recently and might be of interest to you. So without further ado ...
HP is conducting a review of the OpenVMS IBM/SNA connectivity software, and Paul deGroot in the Brisbane office would appreciate it if users of that software would respond to a survey. The full customer letter is an MS-Word document which I have placed on the web server at http://www.decus.org.au/ibm-futures-survey-letter.doc .
Here's an extract:
'Our goal is to work with our customers and partners to ensure that our IBM Interconnect offerings will meet the needs of customers well into the future. Accordingly, we are currently seeking to evaluate the applicability of these products in the timeframe in which we expect production environments to be deployed on Itanium processors. A final decision regarding a port of the OpenVMS products to OpenVMS for Itanium-based systems is expected in early 2003.'
You can either print the letter and mail it back, or respond via the web at http://www.openvms.compaq.com/network/ibmsurvey.html .
Note that support for this software on VAX and Alpha will continue for as long as OpenVMS is supported on those platforms.
Some of you will be aware of the CHARON-VAX emulator product. (It's a VAX emulator which runs under OpenVMS Alpha or Windows NT/2K/XP and you can boot OpenVMS on it.) CHARON publishes a regular newsletter on a monthly basis, which Roger Caffin kindly forwarded. Here's some highlights:
'If [you] wish to be added to the distribution list send mail to
charon@softresint.com. The June 2002 edition of the CHARON Newsletter
contains:
- Some interesting projects that the CHARON products have recently
been helping to progress.
- The latest update on our CHARON-VAX extended memory emulator.
- An application Note on creating SCSI clusters with CHARON-VAX.'
Those of you running OpenVMS Alpha V7.3 will (should!) already be aware the eXtended File Cache (XFC) which is new with 7.3 is subtly broken and should be disabled by setting VCC_FLAGS to '1'. A fix for this will be available Real Soon Now. Steve Hoffman writes,
'V7.3 XFC V2.0 ECO kit release is expected circa 12-Jul-2002. Maybe earlier. OpenVMS Alpha V7.3-1 has XFC enabled; the XFC ECO for V7.3 is a back-port of the OpenVMS V7.3-1 XFC work.'
XFC promises major performance improvements and file activity tracking, particularly across clusters.

Visit www.compaqworkinggroup.org to share your feedback on the latest Instapoll question.
After the migration from Alpha to Itanium, what will be your new systems purchases considerations:
1. The roadmaps give me confidence to continue to purchase OpenVMS.
2. My decision will be dependent on the vendor software converted to run on OpenVMS.
3. My decision will be dependent on the range of third party software
available to run on OpenVMS systems.
4. My decision will be based on the functionality of the technology supported by OpenVMS (e.g. clustering) versus other platforms.
5. I will purchase the best system to meet business requirements - irrespective of operating system.
6. I will consider moving away from OpenVMS altogether.
The results for the last Instapoll are as follows:
What are your plans for deploying NonStop Server platform for web-based applications. NonStop server platform provides a comprehensive set of technologies including Java, XML, SOAP, iTP Web Server, SQL/MX and many more, to deploy Web-based applications.
None - other vendor's products are much more suited to this task. 26.2%
None - we don't have any web/intranet needs. 16.7%

Subject: Alpha TDMS
Hi Everyone,
As you may be aware VAX TDMS was never ported to Alpha OpenVMS back when the majority of VAX applications/layered products were ported. This caused a headache for many customers - who either had to migrate to DECforms - or use emulators - such as the one that was sold by Praxa. There are still a few customers that run VAX - because of their heavy investment in TDMS.
The good news is that there now exists a native Alpha TDMS port, that is about to go into field test.
If you have any customers that still have VAX TDMS and are interested in moving these to an Alpha OpenVMS platform, attached are the release notes. If you have a customer who is interested and can commit to participate in the Field Test of TDMS on Alpha, contact me - and I will forward you an application for them to request participation.

Subject: Latest OpenVMS SIG news, and a Competition
No doubt you are by now all aware that the HP/Compaq shareholder vote has been decided in favour of the acquisition. In fact it's rather impressive to see how quickly the HP logo has permeated the Compaq web site and nothing seems to have been lost in the process (so far as I've been able to tell). So for all references to Compaq in the rest of this mail, substitute HP :-)
As foreshadowed in the the recent DECUS Weekly news, there have been a few items of interest to OpenVMS system managers. My thanks to John Brodribb for passing these on.
There's an interesting new OpenVMS web site, http://www.openvms.org/ which carries a mix of news, views and surveys. It seems to be the work of a single individual to date, Mr Kenneth Farmer, and it's well worth a look.
Speaking of web sites, don't forget to visit http://www.compaqworkinggroup.org/ the 'official' channel between Compaq and its user groups. It's rather too soon to see what will become of this site under HP.
